I'm very close to finishing my build and I'm having trouble choosing a filler that would fill in the grains of my lumber. If you have any experience with these products do let me know.

I think what you want is a pore filler, none of those are pore fillers.

I agree none of the ones shown are pore fillers. In any case You need to go clear or much darker than the wood you are using or you will hide the grain .

What are your woods? How do you plan to finish them? Do you have cutoffs to experiment on?

These are some types of wood /pore fillers, oil. water based ,and shellac/ pumice or rottenstone, And there are also more newer ones such as epoxy. or z poxy . Todd stock has a youtube video on pore filling a guitar with epoxy. And there are other methods as well. Pore filling invlves IMHO a learning curve. I started using the oil based product with silica behlens back in the early 80/s and it took time to learn to fill mahogany pores. Good luck !

I use aqua coat Martin uses a very dark filler and hasn't hidden the grain yet ,since the purpose of the filler is to fill pores not cover the grain

he colors it very dark to show the pores he likes that look

John, isn't that Elmers product the same as what the OP is posting? Those products are for when you have errors in your wood work and you can just fill them in an attempt to hide them and in my experience it never looks good. May as well use saw dust and glue.

I like aquacoat very much now too and you can dye that as well.

Wayne uses the regular elmers I don't use that one
I also know people using drywall joint compound

I'm with John. Wood filler is for filling nail holes. Leave it for the cabinet makers.

Finish resin epoxy will work, like what is used to do fiberglass layups. Squeegee on a few coats and sand back to level.

filling is part of finish prep so understanding that is part of the solution
I tried about every filler out there. I do find the aqua coat as easy process as I have found yet
The epoxies can leave foot prints under the finish is not done correctly
Aqua coat is simple and you can get a great level and it is easy to color if you want to color it

Aqua coat is waterbased can you use that the under nitro?

Yes. A layer of shellac goes under and over each coat. Check the directions.
