I have the neck back on. Shimmed it a little for more clearance. The nut is a little high, but I haven't got to it yet because the high e snapped. Right in the middle!

Found that I had a gut string of the.same diameter. Strung that one up, and it seemed good, still stretching. Then it snapped right at the top of the pin.

It probably only has about 15 pounds of pressure. .6mm gut with a 620 scale. What should I check, the nut slot seems smooth, and wide enough. I always forget to use a pencil for lube. How about at the pin?
It seemed to pull up smoothly, but it didn't fall inside until I pulled the pin. Is that normal. It really has no weight with just a plastic ball and a leather washer on it.

Sharp edge on the back of the saddle? Basically anywhere the string breaks (bends) across the saddle or nut can put a nick on the string. For example the nut slot may be smooth, but if you were really careful filing the slot the edge of the nut slot is really sharp. I take care to hit all of the edges with a bit of sand paper as I have had many strings break in early setup.
