Here, for your viewing pleasure, is the second of two guitars that I recently completed. This one is a 00 sized body in quilted mahogany with a Douglas fir top. Neck is mahogany. Fretboard and bridge are thuya. Bindings and rosette are curly maple. Scale length is 24 3/4”. Initial impression is that the sound is very balanced with a good midrange bite.

Back when I was planning this guitar, I asked for thoughts or experience using thuya. Not much response but there were a couple of naysayers. I took that as a challenge and decided that it’s so pretty I had to give it a try. Obviously it hasn’t passed the test of time yet, but so far so good!

It sure does look great. I wonder if soaking thin CA into it would help strengthen it?

How does Doug Fir compare to other top woods?

Good test, Andy. I'd never heard of thuya - and it looks quite nice.

That's a great looking guitar. The thuya looks really good and so does that Doug fir top.

I like the whole look. That Doug fir just LOOKS tough.

Nice looking combo!

How did you decide on the plate thickness for the fir?

Thanks for the kind words. The Doug fir top was fairly stiff along the grain. Final plate thickness was determined by flexing and tapping until it felt and sounded about right. Not very scientific, I know but that’s just how I gauge plate thicknesses. I’d have to check my notes but I think it ended up at around .100” - .105”

For those wondering how this guitar sounds, here’s a video of Don Bray making it sound wonderful - https://youtu.be/buv8bMjiILs

Good looking guitar! I have some thuya burl, I never thought of using it for a bridge or fretboard as it felt so soft. It looks good on the guitar. The guitar sound lovely, a really balanced warm sound.

Sounds as good as it looks — and that’s really saying something.

The guitar looks and sounds very nice!
The Douglas fir soundboard doesn't seem to be lacking in any way.
Someone sent me a fir top several years ago. It seems very stiff, but heavy, so I have been less inclined to use it. Your guitar might inspire me to try it.
