Hi everyone,

I have not been on this board forever, but I know you guys can answer this.
I found some hardwood on the street - literally. I have not built a guitar in a while, but it would be great to make some back and sides from this.

The color of the wood is more accurately represented in the brighter picture - the reddish-orange color, the picture with the bike tire.
Unfortunately, it is flatsawn from what I can tell, but I am not sure if that should stop me from trying to make some sides with it.
It is very heavy and makes a nice ringing sound when tapped.

Thanks in advance !

Ipe - that sucks- I see it is hard to work with and dulls tools fast. Not sure if I am ready for a challenge/headache like that.
Ipe does make sense - as it was thrown out and the boards are pre-grooved on the edges. Someone is building a nice deck.

Can you put up a pic of the end grain?

Carbide tipped cutters have allowed us to work with many woods that were once considered un-millable. Ipe (a.k.a Brazilian walnut) might make a very nice guitar.

Looks like Ipe to me. I have built one guitar with it. Bent easily. Looked pretty good under finish. I have used it twice as a fingerboard and was happy with the results. For me, splinters resulted in almost instant infection. Had to wear gloves while handling it.

Could be red balau as well. It's pretty popular for fences and decks and known as the 100 year fence.

I agree. It’s almost certainly a length of ipé decking — looks exactly like stuff we used for a deck built in North Carolina. Quite heavy and extremely durable, but generally uninteresting under finish.
