Anybody tried the EnduroVar II? How does it compare to the original EnduroVar?

Oh no! Just after I switched to using EnduroVar after using it on the last two instruments and being happy with it. The General Finishes website says that EnduroVar II replaces EnduroVar. Fingers crossed that the new formulation does not affect performance in any significant way.

I recently finished one with Endurovar. Turned out very nice, feels spectacular on the neck, easy to apply with a brush, easy to level and polish by hand, but it colored the instrument more than any other finish I have used. Would love to have the same finish without the color.

I'm thinking that's the original EV Ed. OP was asking about Endro Var II, it's supposed to be a lighter amber.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks Colin - I was hoping for an improvement in color

General Finishes also sells High Performance Topcoat that is clear and can be brushed. My local cabinet shop uses that a lot and swears by it. I'm been working with EM 6000 and that is clear and can be brushed, though I am spraying it.

I had a gallon of what I thought was the original shipped to me a couple months ago. I just opened the box and low and behold it’s EVll. I opened the can and it looks more like EM6k though a bit more viscous. It no longer has the pinkish hue. Reading the label (crazy, right?!) it requires you to sand between every coat. This isn’t likely an issue for those applying with a brush, but it’s kind of a deal breaker if spraying, at least for me.

Anyway, it’s back to Target EM6000 for now.

PS Jay, if want to give it a try, stop up and I’ll give you half.

Best, M

Actually, I just looked, and the original Enduro Var carried the same instructions to sand between coats to improve adhesion and flatness.

Hi Dave,

Yeah, I was kinda wondering what the original label said. The new label says *sand between coats*. I saw sanding as optional with the original, though I’d usually scuff sand after the first three coats.

Here's the instructions for the original Enduro Var. I usually sand between days, not necessarily between coats...
