...they try to lure me back in. Received these tantalizing images today from the FORMER boss with a note promising that all of this could be mine, if only I would come back... Decisions, decisions... Attachment: ScaryLowden1.jpeg Attachment: ScaryLowden2.jpeg Attachment: ScaryLowden3.jpeg I know! Super-tempting! |

That is the deepest nut slot I've ever seen. |

Not much neck left on that, good thing it's laminated. I'd go hide somewhere ![]() |

What is the story on how that happened? |

My guess is that someone 'fixed' it. |

Well whether or not you return to the guitar job Woodie, I think I speak for the others here that we have always appreciated your informed input. Good Luck Dave |

Well, think of it this way: If nobody messed up guitars, then repair people would not have jobs. That's the attitude I have to keep when I do my own day job. Be thankful for those who make mistakes; we get paid to clean them up. |

I also appreciate the razor sharp edge of the nut protruding past the fretboard..... |

He was a real hot player and needed the air gap to cool the strings. Don't you guys know anything? |

As long as we're piling on - how about the huge space at the edge of the fretboard to the low E string Ed M |

Wood is softer than bone. It was easier to file the neck slot than to file the nut blank. Any apprentice can tell you that. ![]() Also notice that little crack in the wood where the bottom of the nut sits - I've heard that a little "crack" is almost as addictive as guitar building. ![]() Nice to see you posting again, Woodie! |

Thanks to all for the ear-to-ear grin...so appreciated in these times which can be less-than-joy-filled for some. Doing well - still planning a new shop, but on hold until my current adventure is complete. I know we have had some threads on the butchery that is horrible repair work, but after seeing the 'repair' inflicted on this Lowden in person yesterday, I still cannot fathom how a cracked head-stock became a deeply compromised neck at the hands of someone claiming to be a repair person. The massive ebony cross-grain shim under that huge chunk of bone is the (dis)grace note setting this person's work apart from all other ham-handed practitioners of luthieristical mayhem. All that aside, I am certain there is a mother somewhere crowing to friends and relations about the bottomless set of skills possessed by her very special, very talented luthier-child. We just cannot help ourselves. |

Woodie G wrote: ham-handed practitioners of luthieristical mayhem. With your permission I'd like to steal that phrase. But first I have to figure out how to pronounce "luthieristical" ![]() |

It rhymes with Luthier Mystical. I think. ![]() |
