I've seen a point made at least twice in recent threads that the OLF doesn't encourage build threads.

I've never picked up any sense that build threads are discouraged here, officially or otherwise. In fact, I've seen many posts thanking people for build threads and/or asking for more.

There even is a subforum specifically for build threads called OLF Doc-U-build.

I'm not sure where this idea comes from. Am I missing something?

I've only been hanging around here for a year or so and didn't pick up on that either... though I don't really have the time to generate one, I'm sure there are people who could learn a good deal from well documented builds. I do think they would be best in a separate forum though.

I wasn't aware of that forum either, which is why I like seeing build threads in the "guitar building forum". I don't generally visit the other sub forums to see if there are any new posts. The MIMF has a board index where you can see at a glance the latest postings in the various sub forums.

I've done a build thread in the uke forum and have another one "active" at the moment. The problem with mine is long gaps in activity. :) So perhaps keeping things in a specific location could be helpful for those that want to follow along vs having the build thread(s) buoy to the top of the main acoustic forum when activity occurs?

I don't really have a preference. I learn a lot from others in their build threads but if the discussion goes too far off topic it can be distracting.

Build threads were discouraged at the MIMF back I. The day (I don’t know if they are still or not). The rationale was born from the fact that MIMF was around in the very early days of Internet forums and may of the viewers did not have access to high speed internet. Pages could become difficult to load if there was a lot of info. Build threads happen to be very picture heavy so the moderators would have to note that threads had pics so people could choose to click on them or not. Back then, the forum was heavily moderated and they made efforts to reduce the load in the staff. Additionally, I believe space was an issue to some degree.

They found that most build threads never got finished. The request was to hold everything until the project was done and post it all them. That would avoid having a bunch of incomplete threads hanging out there. But, it would also rob the community of real time discussions inspired by what was being shown.

IMHO, threads are not being moderated here or cleaned up for archive so there is little downside to allowing them. The sections in this forum are not really used by a lot of people, everything tends to be dumped in the guitar making forum. I have taken to largely ignoring the sub forum titles and just clicking view new messages every time to see what is out there then I click on what I want to read.

Hah, I never went far enough down on the list to find builds. Sorry. I decided to do it mainly to keep on it. I did it for a violin on mimf, and now that one only needs pegs, a tailpiece and strings, so it got done quickly, at least for me.
I try to show things that might be different, like all hand tools.

I like build threads that show how the various tasks were accomplished and problems were solved. That takes a fair amount of time to document decently. I did a mandolin build in the Doc-U-Build section here. I see it has had 130,000 hits so I guess somebody likes them.

I agree and that is why I love the challenges. It is nice to see several real time build threads with a lot of discussion!

WHAT?!!! No build threads? It’s what keeps me coming back.

If anything I lament there are not more build threads. I think I would have gotten bored and given up years ago if it weren’t for the inspiration of seeing others build.
