I've read that Torres would fit and glue the back braces to the sides before gluing on the back. Has anyone tried doing this for the harmonic bars on the soundboard? If the back was glued on first there would be more opportunity for cleaning up glue squeeze out in this more visible area. Having the harmonic bars glued in place in the sides would help hold the shape of the guitar. In the case of "open" harmonic bars there may be very little gluing area that needs to contact the soundboard. |

If you're using a workboard, like in the old Spanish tradition, it would be awkward to glue the back first. Are you using an outside mold? With care, you can get a clean glueup on the back. A while ago I switched to fitting and gluing x-braces into the linings on steel strings before gluing on the top. After fitting the x-braces, I lightly glued the top onto the braces, then pulled the top off and re-glued the x-braces properly to the top, which let me clean up squeezeout before gluing to the rim. I used several thicknesses of the old binding tape to build up a dam beside each brace to locate it before removing it for the proper glueup. Works well for me. It's how I do back braces on classicals now. |

Long time no see, Waddy. Are you still building? |

It has been a long time. Yes, still building, though this year has been funky! I'm staring at one that has been on the bench for 8 months, without much progress! I think the lack of personal interaction with players has me in somewhat of a low energy frame of mind. Looking forward to the return of the Guitar Festivals and Competitions! |

Hi Waddy - 2020 and now has me a bit unmotivated too. I need to snap out of it. My parents and in-laws have gotten their shots. My wife got her first on Friday. I'm just a guitar builder and considered non-essential. So I will have to wait till May. |
