I just wanted to increase awareness of a great resource: the various instructional videos available (for reasonable costs) at O’Brien Guitars. I knew that Robbie had his own instructional videos, but I’m just now, over the last few weeks, taking advantage of some of the other offerings. The finishing videos from Jeff Jewitt are superb, and I’m in the middle of learning a lot from the Bill Nesse rosette making course. There is a Trevor Gore series I want to buy, as well. There’s a lot of good stuff on the site!

+1, another upvote for the O'Brien Guitar courses. I've purchased the steel string top voicing part of his acoustic build class as well as the neck reset one he did with Michael Bashkin. I like the fact that you can buy portions of the full courses if you want.

I have learned an enormous amount from Trevor Gore's tap testing, and Michael Bashkin's fretting videos.

Robbie is not only a great teacher, he is a great guy. One of the few luthiers with national name recognition who is down to earth and treats everyone like a friend. His online courses are great; from spray finishing to building cutaways, he has helped me and countless others to improve our techniques and gain new tips and tricks.

Also for Robbie. My first scratch build was following Robbie’s acoustic course. It was money well spent to have an end to end method shown on video that I could pause and rewind on the iPad to my hearts content.

I highly recommend for anyone but especially a new builder. Mixing and matching methods from various YouTube videos can potentially lead to frustration and a new builder giving up. Following a single method start to finish will be of great help.

Brad, very good advice. While there are many effective ways to successfully accomplish the same things in guitar building, it can be frustrating and discouraging for newer builders to apply multiple methods. Using a single unified method as a baseline is a great way to learn the fundamentals. From there, one can experiment with other techniques based on experience rather than theories.
