I’m looking for pics of a diamond volute with a backstrap. I am hoping to see how people blend the neck, backstrap and volute together.

I own a lot of guitars, but none have this combination

Appreciate the help as always.

Seems like those would be mutually exclusive.

Not at all — but demands considerable skill. See the photo gallery on James Olson’s site:

I don't think that Olson's back veneer classifies as a "back strap". In my experience a back strap extends onto the neck shaft. Olson's is fitted around the volute.

Not quite the same thing, but Doug Unger, the great banjo and mandolin maker, sort of builds the volute into his backstraps. Not quite a diamond volute, but the same idea, and could be done with a diamond just as not-easily...

Thanks a lot for posting this link. I've been puzzling over how to go about that for a long time and this video makes the process very clear.

An easy way to do the veneer "around" the diamond, is to do the modified bridle joint and glue a piece of veneer to the back of the peghead section before gluing it to the neck shaft portion. This picture doesn't show that, but I'm sure y'all can get the idea. As Barry said, it really isn't a backstrap, and doesn't perform the same function - it's cosmetic only.

Well done Pat. You've given me a modicum of confidence on doing a cutaway like that
