Post subject:  What is goin on here?

I follow a luthier on Instagram who recently posted this pic of a build he’s working on. What is happening here? Is it a burl? Layers of gamer that has been sanded through? Any ideas?

It’s a specialty oxidized metal plate. Copper if I remember correctly.

Check out David Marks Gilding and Chemical Patination.
It's really cool, been thinking about that over the years myself. I'm a slow thinker:)

He does. He also does some kind of paper mosaic rosette (I think that was him)
