Post subject:  SUPER Robo Sander
Well, not quite robo sander as it does not have the bearing guide, but that can be easily added.

However I made a super robo sander. I took some rubber disc and mounted it on a 1" threaded rod. Then Turned it until I can fit a 4" sanding sleeve into it (I used 5" rubber discs because the 4" one was too small, I needed to turn it until it was 4.5 inches in diameter). So now instead of a puny 2" robo sander I have a SUPER robo sander that is 4" in diameter, 8" tall. I can sand backs and sides with this now. So it's a poor man's drum sander as I can't find it in Taiwan.

Below is a regular robo sander for comparison. I probably would not run this in a drill press however...

Do you always your amp under the end of the mill table?

Interesting, but must be quite heavy.
May be OK for dread sides, if the threaded rod is dead straight (common problem with home made drum sanders) and you fit a rotating handle and turn down the end to fit a cordless drill.
But I doubt you will get it into tight waists. IIRC, OMs, OO, O, Jumbos are about 3" diameter, cutaways even less.
And I wouldn't trust that anywhere near a flat surface like a guitar back, especially at the edges..
I have enough problems using abrasives backed with flat blocks of varying softness/hardness without removing multiple gouges of varying depths.

If Tai is using it in place of a drum sander the sides would still be flat. It looks like it could be a good start for a small homemade drum sander build - something similar to the performax 10/20. If I tried to use something like that hand held it would be a disaster.

I will not use this anywhere near a hand drill. This thing weights more than most hand drills.

Also I'm not using this to sand sides after the box is closed. I'm using it to sand them when it's straight so I don't need to use a planing attachment (and all the mess it comes with). I turned it with a lathe tool so it's pretty much flat to within .005" (I am not going to do with micron level precision). they don't need to be super flat.

Besides plenty of people make their own drum sanders that are not machined with hair width precision (they are trued by turning the motor on and using lathe tools by hand, not clamped to a vise and advanced like a metal lathe). Those worked fine.

The machine I have weights 3000lbs so it does not care about spinning such a giant drum but it is very helpful for me to thickness backs and sides. I can finish the rest off with orbital sanders. I would have preferred a lathe honestly but I do not have one at the moment and I don't know when I can get one.

So it's not actually a robosander of any description, it's the drum for an 8/16 sander.
