I just got this in from stewmac ... it’s a router bearing for binding and such, but it looks like it’s missing some of the bearing or something... the other side looks like the others Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Looks like the outer part is just extended. |

I've never seen one like that. Try it on a piece of scrap. If it's no good you'll know directly. |

I have a couple of bearings that have a similar construction, but they are used on each end of a small spindle. The way that bearing is made it looks like it would either catch debris or interfere with the cutter,or if mounted the other way make it difficult to tighten the retaining screw with a pair of pliers (I often use pliers in lieu of the usual hex key) But if those actually are non issues the bearing might be O.K. |

Too bad all the bearings don't have an extended collar. Sometimes it's a close call getting the bearings to run against the body when routing purfling shoulders when the binding channel is cut first. I prefer doing it in that order because I feel it helps reduce potential tearout of the spruce by taking less meat. Brian |

I recently (3 months ago) ordered a new set of their binding router bearings and none of them look like that. |

I think the suggestion to contact SM was a suggestion to pick up the phone and ask. I think email is easy to stack up and reply when convenient. |

SM is pretty invested in customer service. If you are not happy with something, they will do a lot to make it right. |
