I used to see quite a bit of Hans but regretfully have not been over to his place for over a year. He has pretty bad pulmonary disease and was on O2 last time we talked. He quit building and sold all his wood and tools a couple of years ago.

I’ll check in with him. Thanks for the reminder. He produced some real masterpieces out of a tiny basement shop.

I was lucky enough to buy his book when it was briefly available, and correspond with him a bit here on the OLF. Please pass along our wishes that he enjoy better health.

Same here. Hans really helped me a lot when I was building my first mandolin, including all the measurements for thicknessing the top. I know he's been dealing with some significant medical issues, hope he's doing ok.

I've been cleaning up my work area lately and have found myself thinking of Hans quite a bit. I have both of his books on my shelves, along with a few sets of white oak that I purchased after seeing his amazing work on the forum. As his participation here declined, the community lost a valuable contributor of great talent and integrity, as well as a unique source of inspiration.

I heard back from Hans He is weaker but can still walk eight blocks with Oxygen. Still kickin’.
I hope to get together with him when conditions permit.

I told him there is still interest in his books.

That's great news! You're a lucky man to be able to pay him a visit. And, yes, one of his books is about guitar building and the other covers the mandolin .

Many of my guitars are ladder braced and I learned a lot from Haans bout that style of building.

He was very generous with his knowledge and he was very encouraging.

Thanks for the update. Good to hear that he's hanging in there. I very much admire his work and his photography skills too.

Thanks for the update. I frequently visit his website for inspiration; his guitars are stunning. I regret not purchasing his book back when it was available.

His books are Building the American Mandolin and Building the Obscure American Guitar. They are self-published workbooks with detailed step-by-step guidance. More info can be found on his website: https://www.brentrup.com
