I’m taking this pickup out of a friends guitar, quality install including globs of silicone and hvac duct tape (the good stuff). I am having a tough time figuring out how to remove the part of the pickup embedded in the bridge plate, never seen one glued in like this. Anyone have any tips? Repair is not my biggest forte, I could use any help anyone has. Ha. Thanks for looking! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

How about more information such as what kind of guitar is this AND what is the reason you're inside it, will a new pup be installed and if so what kind? Repair work is often dealing with prior hack... work it happens frequently. To be fair too methods in the past have changed or evolved at times and that is not necessarily hack work. But this sure looks like whomever installed it didn't give a flying.... about serviceability. Lastly until I have more information if the uninstall of a pup is overly invasive and it's not going to be in the way of what you intend to do next, say a new modern pup there is always the option to leave it and snip away any leads, wires or anything that can rattle or vibrate. Do you know what the original pup is, what kid it is? Thanks |

Thanks Hesh. It is a 1984 D18. I’m taking the pickup out because he wants to get rid of it and also replace with an under the bridge pickup in the future, one of the sticky ones on the bridge plate. He hasn’t decided which pickup yet, so I don’t know the exact model of the one for the future and I have zero idea about the one in it right now. It has another part to it, a foil transducer (just wanted to sound smart, have zero idea what it is) that was installed with HVAC foil tape. Lots of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Is the foil a transducer or some sort of grounded "shielding"? |

Yeah that's nasty. if he/she likes the K&K with three glue on transducers the bridge plate in front of the pin holes needs to be free of any obstructions so you can super glue the transducers on. I'm not a fan of using self stick adheasives and use medium CA instead, just one little drop on each transducer. First though I freshen up the bridge plate and sand it a bit and then spray CA accelerator on a paper towel and wipe the pate with the accelerator. This makes the medium CA kick off faster when you position and stick a transducer. Be careful not to glue your finger in the box and don't ask me how I know this. So I can't tell from your pic if the bridge plate in front of the pin holes is clear or not. If it is or if it can be again I am inclined to not attempt to remove more of this thing if it puts the guitar at risk and of course heating a bridge plate should only be done by repair pros as you can split the top's center seam. Better yet instead of a Lyric with a mic on the bridge plate or the K&K what about a Baggs Element? It's a UST (under saddle transducer) and all you have to do in side the box is pitch the crap you can get out, snip wires and secure anteing loose. My apologies Blake I just can't see the bridge plate in your pics to know if we can get something under the thing, the pup transducer to pry it off. |
