I want to try shellac, top only, on my current build (bolt on neck) and WB lacquer every where else. Which should I do first & how do I mask things

I would run the WB first to avoid the water or glycols from softening the shellac.
Here is a quick tutorial on masking off guitars to finish them. https://howardguitars.blogspot.com/2015 ... ces-i.html

Would a wash coat or two of shellac on the top be a good idea? It would reduce the chance of tearing out fibres when removing the masking. And if any of the WB product seeped under the masking it might prevent any staining/discolouring of the top. The wash coat would be sanded or scraped away before final finishing.
