Rather than buy Richlite fingerboards for $18... Where might I be able to buy a board at a reasonable price that I could cut out my own fingerboards, bridges, and binding? Any thoughts? |

The stuff I have is also scraps from a cabinet shop. I took some that was headed for the dumpster, but plenty of it went into the dumpster. The stuff I got was 2 inches thick and would require resawing to make fingerboards. It came in 5'X12' sheets and weighed close to 800 pounds.I've milled a bunch of that stuff with saws and routers and much prefer working with wood. You might contact the local cabinet shop supplier and see if any cabinet shops have ordered any in your area. They would probably have "scraps" that would be big enough for lutherie uses. |

You can order custom sized boards, and the price changes accordingly. I spent quite a bit of time calculating to get the best cost/board. A board size of 22.5" x 20" would yield 10 Tele fretboards at an average cost of only $9.77/board including shipping. *EDIT* Just checking the site the site that Tom linked to above, they come out about .50 cheaper per board. You also get a larger slab to cut from, so you might be able to cut some bass boards out of it as well. |
