My daughter just did an article for Acoustic Guitar mag on 4 women makers. They all make lovely instruments, but I was especially impressed by the gypsy jazz guitar. Also, most of these guitars are small.

I've seen several of Maegen Wells' guitars and got to meet her twice at the LaConner guitar show. Beautiful instruments and a great person.

I got to see Shelly Park perform on her guitars a couple times years ago when she was a member of the gypsy jazz band Pearl Django and I used to own one of her guitars like the one in the photo in the article. Gorgeous guitar and top notch craftsmanship.

I got to attend an archtop building seminar with Maegan last year.
The only problem, it was not long enough.
Otherwise great, really nice person.
Good to see that Luthiery is becoming less male dominated.

A year ago my daughter hosted a ukulele camp for girls 10-13 and StewMac sponsored it. They sent uke kits, clamps, dye, glue, the whole thing. They also sent a film crew to film the last 2 of 6 days:

I played this a year ago, but I find it very inspiring. Last year she had 7, this year for her second go she had 10 kids. I go up for a day to help out and these kids are truly marvelous. And Dan Erlewine is the coolest dude going for sponsoring this and for calling her his colleague.

Last month, on vacation, I had a nice few days in Vancouver and wondered if I could find a good guitar shop with some interesting instruments by local builders that I didn’t know. Mission accomplished at Blue Dog Guitars - a great shop (but only open for a few hours on tuesdays and fridays!). There I saw and played some of Shelley Park’s guitars. There were 4 or 5 made by her, mostly Maccaferri style - very nice. But the one that I absolutely loved was a recreation of the style of “cylinder back” acoustics that were made in the 20s or 30s by Vega and Howe-Orme. Just spectacular sound and feel. Hard to put it down. Here is a video of Eric Bibb visiting the shop and playing the same guitar. When I played it I sounded just like Eric - honest. Please don’t go and buy it. I will be back to get it right after my lottery ticket comes up.
