Pete Taran started Independence Saw in the late 90's, making the nicest little saws you ever saw. In the 00's he sold to Lie-Nielson, but he has decided to start making some again. For all of you that have to have the best but don't like those vintage thingies, try this:

No affiliation yada yada yada, and more vintage saws for me

One of the build students was gifted with the shop's old Independence Tool dovetail saw, but prior to that, I did get to use it a bit. Other than the handle being less of a good fit than I might wish (smallish hands), it was a wonderful tool which seemed to effortlessly guide itself. I opted for the Lie-Neilsen tapered dovetail when it came time to upgrade from my re-toothed and tweaked hardware store dovetail saw, but there is something about a fully handmade tool that begs it be used. For a tool which might see decades of use by the original owner, the price seems outrageously reasonable.

"and more vintage saws for me"

+1

The old saws you can find at flea markets for $15 -$20 can often perform much better than the newer stuff found in the hardware store.
I'm sure the Ne Plus Ultra saw is an equally fine tool to the old Disston saws (maybe better) but my pocketbook likes the old stuff better.

I have a matched set of pre 1920 Disston backsaws in rip and crosscut - some in 8", 10", 12" and 14" - and I can't imagine sawing getting much better. Handles fit my hand perfectly. I had them professionally sharpened and set one time to get them in shape, but I do the work now.
