I've built a couple guitars with EIR B & S and pore filled with Z-Poxy without any surface prep like a DA or Acetone wash before applying the epoxy. Seemed to work/bond and finish fine.

I just tried a new UV cured product as a pore fill on an EIR back and it would not cure, presumably because of the Rosewood oils. Stripped it with acetone and finally got it to harden but it was a mess.

Question - do you all prep Rosewood with and kind of DA/Acetone or other wash before finishing? Gluing?

Other methods/techniques?

With UV you usually need an adhesion promoter between the wood and the pore fill. What pore fill are you using?

You can use the adhesion promoter from Simtec most likely.

Here is the Simtec product: http://www1.inetba.com/simteccoatings/f ... x1MSDS.htm

I couldn’t find a description link on their site, but you can contact them directly. I might have the PDF in email too if you want to PM me your address.

Here's the UV product. I tested it on a scrap and it hardened fine, I think because I just spread it and set it in the sun. For the back I massaged it in to the grain and I think I mixed the RW oils with it and it was a no go.

The manufacturer suggested Shellac if I remember correctly (which is simple enough) but am still interested in any other surface prep? Just the Simtec product? Just shellac? DA wash? Acetone wash?

Sorry, I was assuming a UV light equipment situation. The heat from the lamp pulls the oils to the surface I believe. UV finish is all mechanical bond so the oils can cause issues with adhesion.

I guess the same could happen using this, if you put it out in the Arizona summer to bake or something. :) Doesn’t seem good for the guitar though.

Still curious - do you, or anyone, prep the RW before pore filling/finishing?

I use the Simtec adhesion promoter. I think you’ll need something no matter what.
