Saw a video on the current Gibson acoustic assembly line. The guy binding the heads had a commercial heat gun running pointed up in a holder. He waved the long binding piece over the heat gun, pressed it into its position on the head until it cooled, then used this file jig to adjust the joint at either end. Very simple. Just a reasonably tight fitting groove that the file runs in.

Interesting, can you post the link please Ed, had a look, can't find.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Misspoke myself - it is a tour of the Fender acoustic guitar place. Around 28:00 and later

Interesting. Wonder if it would work with wood binding?

I think if you can find a file with machined teeth it would do a great job. Notice how he flipped the file over a couple of times - he must be using a single cut file.
