Next project is a ABG for a grandson. He's the upright bass player in the high school jazz band.

What's the recommendations for B&S/Top woods from my stash?

B&S....Kyana/EIR/Bocote/Pao Ferro/Che Chen/Lacewood/White Oak/Walnut (had an A.Hix Ebay problem for a while).

Top....WRC VG/Redwood - figured or VG (old hot tub bottom)/Alaska Specialty Sitka.

J200 body (have the mold)/Stanley bracing/MiniFlex sound.

I know there are many factors involved re:bracing, etc, just looking for some broad opinions.

Thanks Folks!

Carl

As most upright basses are made of spruce I would stay with a spruce top. I think Bocote would be a nice match for this on a bass.

My vote would be for EIR and a softer piece of spruce. Acoustic-only sound of ABGs is pretty thin so inclusion of a mic system is a good idea. Might be worth making a jig to measure intonation before committing to gluing the bridge. A friend has a T****r ABG and the intonation is atrocious, so much so that it is close to unusable.
