A friend of mine cleared some walnut and cherry trees on his farm about 30 years ago. He had it sawn into lumber and stacked it in his barn and never touched it. I brought a few pieces into my shop a couple years ago. I just did some resawing and found this neat looking set.

I've only built a few guitars, but I think walnut is my favorite material so far.

Whenever I work with walnut, I wonder why I ever work with anything else Looks nice, smells nice, good medium density and hardness, and doesn't have interlocked grain so it works easily with edge tools, and it bends more easily than any other wood... and on top of all that, it's cheap and sustainable (as long as the walnut twig beetle doesn't wipe it out). The only thing I don't like is the relatively high humidity expansion rate. But at least it's tough, so it doesn't tend to crack even if the back does turn inside out in the winter.

I love it too. And that back looks fantastic.

I too love the stuff. Just about every aspect of working it is please t including the smell. I just finished a walnut guitar with a sound port. I love that I can still get a feint scent of walnut coming out of the port when I play it.

I smell a novel marketing approach there. I envision sound port sniffing becoming a thing guitar connoiseurs do at high end boutique guitar shows.

So should we start calling these "Vape" ports instead of soundports? Marketing ,marketing
Maybe we can add some nicotine and get the players as hooked on guitars as we are on building them. Actually I think sniffing soundholes has been going on for quite some time. I remember the smell of cedro emanating from the soundhole of my first handmade classical guitar as a child. And then there is the smell of BRW or ABW or the wonderful smell of tambootie, the working of which can lead to blindness. Should guitar reviews add a smell evaluation to their review?

One of the items I always wanted to see on the market would be luthier's cologne. BRW, WRC, cedro, Mediterranean cypress, the list goes on. BTW, as nice as cedro smells, it tastes awful.

Walnut is a Pleasure to work with . I love turning it on the lathe . I have made some really beautiful stuff with it .

I like walnut but can't stand the aroma...yuck!
