I/ve blown my 2 nd motor on my 25 yr old delta sander 6 by 48, The original one lasted about 18 years , But I did not like the 3450 rpm delta motor which eventually died only to be replaced with a recycled 1750 rpm sears 1/2 hp BS motor which died a few months ago . Have had no luck finding a used motor on CL or FB. here in OKC. I have a 25 % coupon from HF . My question, are there motors any good ??. The responses seem to be a mixed bag , with most complaints concerning the 2 hp compressor motor with a 7/8 in shaft If you own one or use one . what is your opinion Thank you. I was looking at the 1 hp 1750 farm duty motor.

Any chance there is a Tractor Supply or a Fleet/Farm (or Farm/Fleet, they're different) store nearby? Or an electric motor shop to advise you?

I occasionally "harvest" electric motors from HF machines to build other woodworking machines that require 1750 RPM motors. In other words, I buy a cheap HF sander, take it apart, and just use the motor, pulley, belt, power cord and on/off switch. I have not had one die on me yet, but I am not using them day in and day out. If you need it to be super reliable, I would buy a decent brand name one.

It is pretty rare for a motor to be completely toast. Most are repairable.
Use your yellow pages and find an electric motor repair shop around you.
If you don’t have the old 3/4hp motor, they will have something comparable for a lot less tgan you are looking at new.

I have shelled out a lot of motors but have never spent more than $80 to get one fixed.

Good luck to you.

Dave

Ok , lots of good points. The craftsman 1/2 hp 1750 was swapped out from a 38 yr old BS 5 years ago , IMHO not worth fixing. Yes I do use the sander every day in the building process, I have a HF 6 by 48 in sander it works and has never failed yet, it has a 120 grit belt and is used about 1/4 the time the delta is . With a 25% coupon we can get a new HF sander for $210 including tax . Amazon has a 1/2hp 1750 rpml leeson farm duty motor for $185. For better quality motors we are only familiar with leeson, baldor, and dayton. Thank you so much for all the replies. Its good to get feedback!!
