It looks nice but I don't think it would work well in the waist area.

I have one. Wouldn't use it for purfling, but it works very well for it's intended purpose

A gramil is the tool you need to manually cut rabbets for purfling. Gramil has a radius on the fence, not a flat fence like the inlay tools. You can adapt the lv or ln purfling cutters to a gramil to add stringing to a guitar, but it will be challenge to get clean grooves in spruce. Would be really cool to inlay holly stringing on a mahogany top though.

I agree that these tools will not work for purfling at the waist of guitar.

The guy who developed the tools for L-N is Steve Latta. He makes mostly federal furniture (right around 1800) but stringing was also installed in a lot of PA Dutch furniture for the hundred years before that. I watched Steve for a total of about 4 hours doing this, and like making guitars, what is mysterious becomes commonplace once you have done it a bit. I have always wanted to do some geometric stringing in holly on the back of a walnut guitar. Here's Steve:

https://www.finewoodworking.com/2013/10/25/basic-stringing-techniques

He uses both hand tools and a Dremel - he has a StewMac router base for the Dremel - and check out his home-made Koa cutting gauge. Something in there for everyone. Other videos show his making the stringing pieces in more detail.

Merry Christmas

Ed
