Would love to do so, I have the time, and probably the skills....but shipping to Germany would be expensive, then we have a Dalbergia Nigra Fingerboard which would cause some trouble. Well even this would be solvable since the guitar is old, BUT 1200 bucks....for that kind of money you get them without big trouble....so yes, 200 or 300...not more for me....unfortunately |

Reverb says that guitar is worth about $3k in the very best of conditions. I'm not sure that is worth it. Even well restored that thing won't be worth more then $2k. And that's a LOT of work. I could be wrong tho. |

I'm with you, I might consider $200 and then get it for me but I don't see it as good business for a fix and flip. |

So I scraped up some money in a hurry and sent the guy a message. Alot of the stuff on his ebay page is "restoration" projects. We'll see what he says. I have always loved the "smallburst" Gibsons for some reason. Such a pity this one has been tortured so badly in it's lifetime |

Heard back from the guy, it's the usual "I've been offered **** for it". Great, sell it for **** if you can and good luck with the sale. Such a shame, I hope it won't go to someone who will just get it in the mail and then get all bent out of shape at a quote to restore it. Then they just pack it up and leave it on the shelf for the next guy. Ciest la vie. |

It is interesting that s/he has the experience to restore this guitar but is electing to sell it. Obviously, they don't want to invest the time and money to do the work based on the perceived resale value after the work is done. I wonder how the asking price was determined. |

When I think about all the guitars I've bought, repaired, and sold over the years and think about what they are bringing today it makes me wish I had hung on to a few of them. Small bodied Gibson's and Guild's with considerably less damage used to go for about $25. I still have an old Gibson archtop someone stripped the finish completely off of that has some top cracks. I bought it with a 50's Gibson LG (smashed back) - $50 for the pair. And that was from a luthier who was clearing out his stash of repair projects. After I replaced the back on the LG and refinished it I sold it for $150 and was happy to get it. Instruments with extensive repairs are not worth nearly as much as instruments in fine original condition. That guitar is a basket case and even with expert restoration will be worth less than a 34' in average unrestored condition to most buyers. |

Don't think I'd want to deal with that guy anyway. Too greedy. If he finds someone to pay him that much for that guitar then he'll be screwing them. Not the way I like to do things. |

Recently at the local library they had a display of old beat up musical instruments, mostly brass band types, but also one old guitar - a Thornward, a Lyon and Healy production as I understand it, similar to the more famous Washburn brand. It was very ornate, with pearl purflings and fingerboard inlays in the fashion of that era. It had several cracks, a few missing pieces of pearl, a loose neck, and probably a few unstuck braces. The woods were spruce (top) cedro (neck) and BRW (back and sides). When I located the owners I asked them if they would like to have it repaired (for a price that would have netted me a sub-minimum wage) or if they would be interested in selling it. They refused both offers, and were content to use it as a wall decoration where it could slowly deteriorate with time. Upon reflection, I realized my offers for both repairing the instrument or purchasing it were too generous and more made out of a desire to restore the guitar than any pecuniary gain. You can't save them all! That Gibson may share a similar fate - unless two fools meet.

I agree Steve, even from a business standpoint it makes no sense to run off potential sales. Even a redirect like "I can't go that low but how does *** sound?" would've been better. Oh well. And you're right, you can't save them all, but it sure is fun to try. |

The fellow cannot handle being disagreed with. After several messages back and forth he began referring to me as a bigmouth no talent that obviously had never touched a guitar . I cordially invited him to put his world renoun 40 yrs where his mouth was and prove himself. I to am now blocked.
