I’m building an acoustic guitar using a spalted maple back/side set that I bought several years ago. Don’t remember where I got it from. The book matched back is quite attractive (see photo). The side are OK looking but seem to have a lot of runout because they refused to bend without cracking, even though the wood was reasonably thin (.080). So, I’m now in search of some nice spalted maple, roughly matching the back, that I can resaw into some new sides. Looking for something roughly 35” long, 4.5” wide and perhaps .75” thick. Ideally quarter sawn but it must have minimal runout. Any leads? |

You might try asking Wood to Works. I could me mistaken but that spalt line could be a serious weak link. Just saying. |

What Danny said, spalted maple is about the most frustrating wood to work with. I will take a look in my stash and see if I can find a match for you. May take a day or so. B |

Andy, that is going to be a beautiful guitar. One thought on bending the sides. and maybe even fortifying the back, how about doing a laminate? |

Yes, laminated sides is a definite possibility. If I could find a source for similar looking spalted maple veneer, I might be able to laminate it to a side of plain maple. Several possibilities if I can source the materials. The back is quite solid. No worries there. |

“The back is quite solid. No worries there.” I have thought this same thing when building furniture or cabinet doors. Without warning, during sanding, cutting or clamping .... two pieces from one. I ended up fooding any suspect areas with CA. B |

Andy, this is the only piece I have that matches your dimensions. 6-1/2”x 50” x 7/8” There is a bit of heart wood on one face, on the top of the first pic, 4-1/4” from the left edge Last pic is wiped with mineral spirits. I think I could get 4 usable sides out of this, might need to be creative. I could resaw this further to determine usability if you are interested. I would send it for the cost of shipping. Been |
