Finally completed this guitar that I had been building over the winter. Chocolate coloured cedar top, flamed birch body, curly shedua neck, ebony finger board and bridge. Scale length is 25 1/4”. Internal JJB-ELECTRONICS surface mount pickup. Guitar has an access port at the tail end which, when opened, allows a hand and forearm to reach inside the body.

Nice!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That's a beauty, the access port is very cleaver.

I've never used birch but some of my best sounding guitars have had cedar tops.

Thanks for the kind words folks.

Shedua is quite a hard, dense wood. A bit on the heavy side but maybe about on par with a hard maple neck. I’m very happy with it.

I recently posted some pics of how the acces port cover is attached in another thread about a purpleheart and maple guitar - http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=50656&hilit=Access+purpleheart

Nice looking guitar Andy!
The flamed birch may be a wood people should consider for " native wood guitars" some are switching to. It was used by guitar and mandolin manufacturers quite a bit in the past.

Shedua, like Pau Ferro goes by a number of different names. Two you may have heard of are Ovangkol and Amazique. A number of guitar companies are using it as an alternative to rosewood. It is somewhat related to Bubinga.

Lovely. Very cool bracing scheme, as well.
Is that an OM size body?

It’s my own body shape, similar to Martin OM or Taylor Grand Auditorium. In fact that’s a Taylor GA case that the guitar is in.

That must be yellow birch huh? I cut and log hauled quite a bit of it in Wisconsin back in the late 70's.. Never saw some with figure though.. Cool!
