Post subject:  Delta drill press motor noise

My drill press motor is making a metallic rattling sound when the power is on. It does this whether or not the belts are on. Noise stops the instant power is turned off, even though it is still rotating. I do not recall it doing this before. The machine is about 10 years old, though barely used. Any suggestions?

You could use the "find the engine exhaust leak/noisy lifter" trick to try to isolate the noise. Hold one end of a 2ish foot chunk of garden hose up to your ear and move the other end of the hose around the motor area to try to isolate the sound.

Some motors have a centrifugal switch that cuts out the starter windings when the motor comes up to speed. If it is not working properly it might only cut out when the motor is off.

Never mind. A crank handle was loose and vibrating.
