Hi folks, I have a couple of builds coming up. One is a 00028 style guitar, the other is an octave mandolin. I have the wood sets, Sinker Redwood, Sitka Spruce, Walnut and Mahogany. Originally I was going to pair the Sinker and Walnut for the guitar, the Sitka and Mahogany for the Octave Mando. I have been reconsidering and toying with Sinker/Mahogany for the 000 and Sitka/Walnut for the octave. What are your thoughts. Anyone have great luck with either choice? Thanks all, I always look forward to your responses. |

I think of walnut and mahogany as having very similar characteristics (weight, hardness) so I think they will sound very similar when paired with the same top wood. If you don't like the way the Taylor sounds, don't build it like a Taylor. |

To my ears, redwood over walnut is a nice combo for a guitar. I'm not sure about walnut for a mandolin, but I know redwood tops are not all that unusual. If I'm not mistaken, Shawn Lane, the mandolin player for Blue Highways, favors a redwood top paired with the traditional maple back and sides. |

I'd pair the Redwood with Walnut. Anytime I'm stuck for inspiration on tonewood combinations I revisit these videos from George Lowden. Its just one guys thoughts on tonewood, but he's got the gravitas to deliver a sound opinion...
