Any ideas? I was thinking tiger myrtle or possibly snakewood.

Tiger Myrtle is sexy. Zebrawood too.

Closest you'll get to for the tortise shell look is Ringed Gidgee. It's an Australian hardwood. Here's some on curly Blackwood.

Allen, that is REALLY good looking, very pretty combination! There is nothing like a good tortoise celluloid fully backed by a white purfling or BW purfling...

You can try Pete McCurley. He has an Ebay store here.

Haans

That is one beautiful combination. Did you color the surface behind the tortoise to highlight the variations?

Ed, the tortoise pieces were selected for their color from lengths of binding. The backer for the binding is black/white purfling that is the full depth of the binding. Black/white side purfling is glued to the binding before the binding is glued on the plate.
That Gidgee stuff is a pretty good alternative if you have got to have wood binding. It never was a choice for me because wood dents and dings and it is nearly impossible to dye an instrument without a lot of work.
