Tiger Myrtle is sexy. Zebrawood too. |

Closest you'll get to for the tortise shell look is Ringed Gidgee. It's an Australian hardwood. Here's some on curly Blackwood. Attachment: Blackwood and Ringed Gidgee1.jpg

Allen, that is REALLY good looking, very pretty combination! There is nothing like a good tortoise celluloid fully backed by a white purfling or BW purfling... |

You can try Pete McCurley. He has an Ebay store here. http://stores.ebay.com.au/Curly-Timbers?_rdc=1 |

Haans That is one beautiful combination. Did you color the surface behind the tortoise to highlight the variations? Ed |

Ed, the tortoise pieces were selected for their color from lengths of binding. The backer for the binding is black/white purfling that is the full depth of the binding. Black/white side purfling is glued to the binding before the binding is glued on the plate. That Gidgee stuff is a pretty good alternative if you have got to have wood binding. It never was a choice for me because wood dents and dings and it is nearly impossible to dye an instrument without a lot of work. |
