That's awesome. I love that stuff and the story behind it.

Rick is not a hard person to deal with, but he does have a few idiosyncrasies. If you want to buy the whole board you won't have any problems. If you want to buy less than the whole thing , he will cut it, but the "better end" stays in the shop. It keeps him from having small pieces of low quality lumber laying around. If you want the "good end" then you need to take the "bad end" with it. I keep that in mind when I shop there.

It wasn't any of that... I worked with them .. Identified what I wanted.. Ready to buy whole boards... Then when it came time to actually buy it - they couldn't be bothered by the actual "Sell me stuff" part...

My last time there early on the fall he would have sold me cut sets right off the sorting table. I fell in love with a figured Koa set, but couldn't justify the $1200.

Perhaps it's all for the best then... I would likely spend far too much money... ;) ;)

Thanks for posting this about the sinker.... It really does look like fantastic stuff.

I know I am going to sound like a buzz kill, but when you look at some of those pictures the lumber is showing some pretty major defects which would limit how much usable wood you could get from each board. It looks like Rick had fun sourcing that stuff, but all you would be buying is the "back story" and some rough looking wood. I have seen that same situation on some other "sinker" and "ancient" woods advertised by others - questionable looking stuff for big bucks. I'm sure there is some good wood in that mahogany, but if Rick sticks to his usual practice then you might have to take a lot of "bad" with the "good".
I'm not "immune" to a good story, and enjoy seeing things people have made from old and reclaimed and less than perfect stuff. But I can't get my head around paying a premium for marginal material.

I think it would be worthwhile if you can pick the boards..

"I think it would be worthwhile if you can pick the boards.."

To some people I suppose. But he is pricing it at $30 bf and UP while his neighbor is selling 16/4 FAS Honduras mahogany for $12 bf. It's his wood and he can charge whatever he wants for it, and we can buy from whomever we choose, so no heartache there.

This has been on their sight for years. We have sinker sets from time to time for a whole lot less money.

"Who's his neighbor?"

Bill Groff, he used to be Rick's partner before they had a parting of the ways. I'm assuming the prices posted on his web site are current.
