That's pretty cool! One caution (maybe a bit obvious): I think it would make sense to keep the tub in a place where any escaping water would flow to a floor drain without causing a lot of water damage along its path. |

A fixture for a drain hose that is just above the water supply shut off, and going to a floor drain, will help avoid spills. Alex |

Steve, I have a while house humidifier (winter) and a dehumidifier (mostly summer) in my shop. We need a good humidifier around here usually starting around the end of November/start of December when that cold first hits. This year was particularly bad and I have more than the usual number of cracked tops come into the shop this winter. |

This appears to be mire like a vaporizer than a humidifier. Is there any concern for the size of the droplets in the mist? I would be afraid of them settling on the surfaces of the instruments. |

The vapor maker is a little pricey. Looks like a lot of folks are buying them for witch’s cauldrons for Halloween displays. Looks like a good breeding ground for mold, fungi, and other microscopic critters. It would be good to treat the water with something. I love the tank valve. You could leave for a couple of weeks in the winter and not have to have a babysitter for your shop. |

Here's a comment I just left on this video: Tap water has minerals which will be deposited in a fine abrasive powder around the humidifier when the tiny droplets dry. Keep 3-4 copper "Chore Girl" scrub pads in the water. The copper ions will help keep any bad microbes in the water under control... but I would still dump the water and clean everything which comes in contact with water well with a strong solution of distilled vinegar and water once/week or sooner if you see or feel a slime start to collect on the sides. |

I'm very interested in this DIY approach. Just for comparison's sake, I think about how my whole house humidifier works. It is a steam unit. There is a water filter upstream that catches a lot of the impurities in the water, but then there is also an automatic flush system that flushes the tank once a day (I think that is the frequency) so minerals don't build up too fast. But they do build up. I have had to take the thing apart and scrape mineral deposits off the inner walls and heating element. Not that big a deal, but something to be aware of. I figure for a tank as big as the one shown in the DIY video, you could just clean it out every so often and do fine, both to stave off growing gunk and to keep mineral build-up in check. |
