I remember building my first instrument..... I used my fist to bang things into place quite a lot.

Maybe laminated sides? Video is not much better than a snapshot of the process hard to say for sure, but if the glue was spread laminations thin enough it could work

I can almost hear the wood pop from here. Like they say, what ever gets the job done, and if it doesn't you can always find a bigger hammer

The opposite of what I do, when hand bending I use my LMI free form electric bending iron on Hi. I use little spray, just enough to help the heat conduction but not so much that it prevents the wood from heating. With the larger thermal mass of the LMI bender and the high temperature the wood plasticises quickly and usually bends like taffy. With those yellow flames and the thin sheet metal he probably is bending rather cold. Maybe around 220 degrees as I do not see the water turning to steam.

I legitimately can't tell if we're being rude for piling on this guy or if the joke is on us.

" the joke is on us."

Quite possibly. I visited his website and saw some pretty nice looking mandolins. I also found this post on the mandolin cafe:

" a good word for Martin Macica
Shortly after finishing my kit mandolin this Spring, it began to develop some neck issues. I decided that it was time to consult with someone who actually knew what they were doing, and was referred to Mr. Macica by my guitar repair guy. Mr. Macica not only successfully resolved the neck issues, he took it upon himself to clean up some of the other more amateurish aspects of my assemblage (my fretting skills are weak on a good day).
A true gentleman, and I strongly recommend him."

Not knowing all the circumstances, those videos may not be a fair assessment of his abilities. The mahogany he was asked to bend may have been a little too thick.

From the look of his sample guitars in the background of the second video, the joke just might be on us.

Maybe he had just taken the side out of a steam box---or not ,, it didn't seem to be hot.

Was the first video posted done right after and with the same side from the alcohol lamp video? It almost looks like he was getting it hot and rough bent so he could clamp it into the jig. It bent fairly easily when he cramped it down so i’m Betting it was pretty warm, moist and pliable. That is very different from the methods I use, but if it gets the job done, does it matter?
