I cannot remember if stearate is a bad idea. I'm getting ready to order sanding discs from Klinspor and need to decide on this issue and heavy vs lightweight.

Thanks

I've read that waterbase finish doesn't like stearated paper because of fisheye problems. Being an EM6000 user I really like the 3M Gold papers and they are non-stearated.

I just switched to 3M gold for my sanding blocks and love it. So whatever that is, I recommend it!

I just checked. The Mirka Gold I have been using is stearated. Though I could find no where on the Amazon site where it stated that. Luckily, I never use them on finish. Just bare wood.

Haven't had any problems on the wood or the finish with what I believe is a stearated paper using Enduro Var. (3M sandblaster) - see the "Keeping abrasive clean" section here -
http://www.solowoodworker.com/tools/abrasives.html
Correct me if I am wrong, but I did read that most manufacturers have resolved any problems of waterbased finishes and stearated abrasives by modifying the formulation in some way. I suppose they would have had too because of the prevalence of waterbased finishes now.
Any doubts, Abranet I believe is non-stearated

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I haven't had any fish eye problems using any General WB finish with Mirka Gold, Abranet, or Klingspor discs.

I have not had any problems with quality stearated paper. Even the 3M frecut gold is stearated. I believe most good companies have lubricants that are compatible these days. I'm sure there are exceptions but the 3M, Norton, and Klingspor I use has been fine.

I don't like change [headinwall]

I'd swear that 3M Gold was non-stearated. No fisheye here either...

Thanks all. I feel better. I think ll try klingspor this time around. I really like their other products. Let’s see how these fly. I bought their zirconium blue paper, 30 grit for thivknessing oily woods. Stuff lasts forever.
