Here is the latest Luthier Tips du Jour video - In this video I offer a viewer a tip about how not to break bits when doing inlay work. This video as well as all my other videos are available via my website, http://www.obrienguitars.com/videos , LMI's website or on youtube.

I think I need one of those! I see them on the Internet from $30 to several hundred dollars. Can you point me in the the right direction as to one that would be a good choice? Any thoughts you might have on it would be greatly appreciated.

There are several types available. The more money you spend the better the quality and the higher the RPM's.

I have one from John Hall. Loud as hell- use hearing protection. Works great though.

Yep, I'll stick with my 12,000RPM just for the reasonable volume. I do use multiple passes sometimes. Usually I can feel if the bit doesn't want to cut, and back off before breaking it. But eventually all 1/32" and smaller bits do break. This guy sells them cheap, though https://www.ebay.com/usr/jtg1969

Got mine from John, great tool . I had a machinest find the center location of the stew mac circle cutter and use this in conjunction with the die grinder for cutting rosettes on ukes. To just use as an inlay cutter I take out 2 screws , I/ve used the inlay cutters off e vil bay and yes the 1/32in bit does not last long esp with the high rpm die grinder your mileage may vary.

I had a lower RPM cheaper grinder, got an opportunity to get a Sioux brand professional style with much higher RPM and the improvement in cutting ability is awesome. Not any louder than using a dremel though when the compressor motor starts running every few minutes the noise is much worse.

I got a fistfull of bits from my dentst. For free.
Seriously.
Never broken one and some are much smaller and able to do amazing detailed routing for inlay.

They are chucked right into a dremel.
