Hi Guys and Gals, I was given some wood by a late friend (dang melanoma!). His dad was a merchant marine captain in the 60s and 70s mostly in the western pacific. I think most of it is Red Meranti, 1" x 16" x 16'. These pics came from a 6" x 6" x 6' beam that i sliced up diagionally to get some back and sides. Can't identify it in the wood database. What do you think it is? |

afromosia,if super light okoume. The afromosia has a very distinctive smell when sanded or cut (spicy) the okoume does not |

Well I got results back from the US Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, on samples of two of the pictured wood. It was Narra (PTEROCARPUS SP. CF. INDICUS) and Red Meranti (SHOREA SP.). The wood ID service is 3 ID's per year for free. I followed the instructions at https://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/research/cent ... tsheet.php. Took 2 months. The Narra is a suprise, the Meranti expected, but dzsmith had my hopes up for a while...... I'm working on the second parlor guitar out of the Narra (back, sides, neck and binding). They're for grandsons. Been a bit of a fight. It doesn't like to stay bent and it chips, cracks and has pores bigger than mine (epoxy filler shows up on the inside). The completed one does look and sounds great though. |

That's a pretty cool service for them to offer! I like narra for back and sides quite a bit, though the sets I've used were cut very well for guitar... |
