Hi What am I doing wrong, sanding through the sandpaper grades on the heel and one side is nice and clear with nice grain lines, the other side stays fuzzy looking I'm guessing it's a technique thing to do with the open grain Any help please ![]() ![]() Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk |

On the rough side, make sure you sand towards the headstock only. Sanding towards the tenon is going against the grain. Alex |

A great way to sand the heel contours is with the end of the Porter Cable 330 speedbloc sander. The edge where the sandpaper curves around the foam pad and into the retaining clip is perfect for following contours around the heel and headstock transition. There are always scratches in these areas from the shaping process so be sure to use naphtha and close inspection to make sure you got them all. |

Keep sanding... Dampen with wet cloth to raise the grain between sandings. I'd put the heel cap on and start from 60 grit again. Looks like some small flat and wavey spots. Good shapes though. You've got the idea... |

Depending on what kind of finish you're going to use, it can help to coat it with some kind of sealer to lock the wood fibers in place while you sand them. Shellac and thin hot hide glue definitely work (shellac darkens endgrain some, hide glue keeps it looking more like the rest of the neck under finish). Or if you're going to fill with epoxy, then doing that now and continuing to sand afterward might be good, though I've never tried epoxy filling myself. |

To veer from the point, I'd put forth that your heel needs more shaping -- I think the inside curve of the heel could come in a quarter to half inch. As is, it's a bit too massive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
