I have a Whirlpool dehumidifier that runs but does not remove water. I have a hunch it needs new coolant. Is that something that I can easily install myself? Also, if the seals leak. are those things that I can install myself?

Most of the portable units are built to be disposable and have no schrader valves for adding refrigerant. If I were you I'd start looking for a new one.

I was quoted nearly twice the new price for refilling and checking a portable unit....

Check to make sure the fins are free of dust. My little Kenmore did the same thing, ran but did not pull water. I blew the fins free of dust and it was good as new. Just a thought...

I have been through a few of them. I think they are designed to last one season.

I tape furnace filter material over all the intakes and vacuum off the dust frequently --- our portables (several different brands) have lasted 5 or 6 years.

I'm on 3 years with my current dehumidifier. I take the covers off and clean it out thoroughly once a year.

Just pulled mine apart and blew it out. Cleaned all the little nooks and crannies. It's about 15 years old and still works just fine in my 24x24x10 room. If you do blow them out, make sure you don't bend the fins over on the the condenser. If you do bend some over, be sure and comb or rake them back to their original position. If you don't have a condenser comb, a file card will also work.
