Is that the right one for jointing tops? And what's a good price for a used one? Thanks |

The #5 is a Jack & very popular for joining guitar plates. Personally, I prefer a 6 but others find it too big, heavy & awkward. As far as I know, Record doesn't make planes anymore, they were bought out by a tool conglomerate: Irwin, Vise Grip & others I think. I never owned a Record but I've looked them over when they were being made & they were pretty decent, not a Lie Nielsen but decent. Personally I wouldn't pay more than about $70 for one. You should be able to find a decent Stanley #5 for $50 or less. Just my opinion. Kevin Looker |

Interesting piece of trivia I just learned. Apparently the company that bought out Record was shut down for EPA violations.... |

Old Record is good kit, real good. Later stuff not so..especially since they were bolted on to Irwin. |

look for an old Stanley Bedrock on Ebay. You can find them for under $50 and clean em up real pretty. For a number 5 it's worth waiting until a really nice one pops up because they are so common. Some public schools had bedrocks for standard equipment and there's nothing wrong with them now. |

The new Blue Chips are made in Asia. A friend bought a set. I don't know how they stack up against the originals which were a great value. Kevin Looker |

There was one on CL for 40$, but it's actually in another city so I gave up on it. I do already have a Stanley, a newer one I imagine, but I haven't figured out how to dial it in. The blade has grooves in the back that rests on the thumbdial, but it either sticks out way way way too far or not at all within the range of the dial. I may have to shave 1/16- 3/32 off the blade itself. Which seems a bit of a hack thing to do.... |
