what radius are you guys using at the horn on a venetian style cutaway? i designed something that looks great to my eye, but it seems really tight - around 1" radius. the grain would only have to change direction about 90 degrees since the horn is not very tall. what do you think? i will include a picture later if my wording doesnt make sense. thanks. |

I don't think it matters what everyone else is doing for a radius. I think you've got a fine looking cutaway. Glad I don't have to bend one of those! (Lap gits don't need no stinkin' cutaways!). |

Aesthetically speaking, if it looks great, it looks great. It's more about ''bendability'' of wood. I guess it depends on what you'll be using, but I have seen people bending unbendable wood at impossible radii. So eveything is possible. I remember Fred Tellier bent a pretty tight cutaway on a waterfall bubinga side, if my memory is good. Good luck, and let us see! Francis |

hey guys, thanks for the response. yeah, my question was mostly in regards to how tight of a radius is too tight for the average piece of wood. obviously woods will vary from species to species and piece to piece, but "in general" does it look too tight to pull off? ive done all of my bending on a bending machine and ive yet to do a cutaway. so am i creating some trouble for myself in the future or will i be ok? |

Heath, if your hand bending, back it up with a piece of metal similar to your bending slats during the bend and you should be able to pull it off. |
