A student of mine is building a pomele bubinga back/side 00-sized guitar (with Bearclaw Spruce top), and is considering different woods for his fretboard/bridge/headstock overlay. I've suggested that he use bubinga for those as well (a simple but elegant combo which I think looks super-nice), but he wants something else. Can anyone recommend a wood that would complement bubinga nicely? (I don't particularly like the EIR that he's leaning toward). TIA, |

Tell him he's about to overload the senses with wood grain/pattern. Tell him that ebony would be elegant and always in style. If he persists in his present course, steer him towards Macassar ebony as a fretboard. I still think that would overdo things, but this may be something he's got to get out of his system. I've been there...and done that. Steve |

I just made a Bubinga OM, spruce top. The fretboard is Walnut, with BWB purfling, and bound in Goncalo Alves. The body is also bound in Goncalo and it all ties together nicely. The Goncalo turns medium brown after a few days, and its a subtle color difference that wont distract from the bubinga. I like how it turned out. |

Ebony. It looks clean and focuses the attention on the Bubinga. Chuck |
