I bought some pickguard material from Mario Proulx that looks like 30s and 40s style Marin pickguards and want to use this for my 000 I'm about finished with. I have a Martin 000 pickguard to use aas a template. I'm guessing I can cut this material with scissors. What do you use to sand the edges and how do you sand them? I have the StewMac double sided material for attaching the pickguard. Any tips before I start? Thanks! |

Be sure to heat it up with a hairdryer before cutting with scissors (or anything) It's brittle when cold. It cuts like butter when warmed slightly. Be careful of the sharp tip, it can break. I've sanded them with sand paper wrapped around something large, like a coffee can, or a pitcher. |

Mario's turtaloid is great material, I cut warmed with hot water, before putting on the double sided tape material. Smooth and shape the edges with 320 grit then sand up to 1000 grit then buffed with med then fine menzerna. Apply the stick material and trim with a razor blade, I use the soapy water method to float the pickguard into place. Fred |

A neat trick for cutting the soundhole radius is to use a sturdy set of dividers with one point sharpened to a fine point. Several passes will cut right through & produce a near perfect radius. |
