Hi Folks,
If you like what you read here at the OLF and want to be come a registered member so you can ask questions or share what you know, or just simply join in, PLEASE use your real name when you register! OR at least a NAME! Something other thank Dreadguy1 or mrchistle. We try to keep a sense of community here and "internet handles" are not helping.
The more we know about you, the more we feel you are a part of our community and a friend.

For those that have registered under a "handle" we will have a moratorium soon where we will set everyone's permissions so you can change your user name to your real name. Even a first name, last initial is fine.

Please feel free to do so [:Y:]

Thanks!
Lance

I can't create a new login with the same e-mail... It's it possible just to change the user name? Or some moderator could just erase my membership then i cant create a new one with my real name?

I just turned on the "change user name" permissions. You can find them in your profile/edit account settings.

This will be turned off soon, so make a user name change if you want.

Thanks!

I am super glad to see the names switching again. I like the "real" names.

Lance, I've seen you raise this issue several times and I know it must mean a lot to you, but I have to admit your reasoning is not obvious to me. Would you mind articulating what value you think everyone using their given name brings, or perhaps why you believe that using a 'handle' is a detriment to this forum?

I know that there are several posts I would have never made if I knew my professional name would be permanently attached to them.

I think you articulated it better than I could "I know that there are several posts I would have never made if I knew my professional name would be permanently attached to them"
I think if we are hiding behind a veil we can tend to be more abrasive. Say things we otherwise might not.

If you don't want to use your real name thats fine, as a matter of fact, you can continue to use a handle, nobody is twisting arms here. Its just a suggestion.

Exactly. Plus, it seems to increase the feel of community. I am not a HUGE fan of real names since anything you say can be searched (your name can be Googled). I know many employers who use this technique when interviewing people for jobs. So, I try real hard to be nice, although I fail at times. I am certain I would be less likely to give a dam if you only knew me by a handle. In fact, I know this to be true since on some political forums where I have only a handle, I feel free (within the TOS) to let 'er rip. [:Y:]

But hey, that's politics.

Mike

I was thinking along the lines of someone being scared to ask a question that might seem dumb or to speculate on something they are not 100% sure about: things I've posted countless times. Anonymity better fosters a free flow of ideas and information IMO, especially in the context of an educational environment. I understand where you're coming from though and see the need for decorum and civility. Just my $.02.

According to that I'm OK, but I'll change mine to my full name if needed. I didn't really think of "Woody B" as a handle. "Woody B" has been my stage name in bands for years, and it's the name that's on my uniforms at the dealership where I work in the daytime.

I agree with and support the a real name no handles policy, and again, I'll change mine if anyone thinks I should. I have my full name listed in my profile to the left of every post.

When your handle is woody b, and your name is posted in the data in the left column, I don't think you'll be able to hide behind your handle! [headinwall] So, Woody, quit saying stupid stuff! :D We know where you live!

While on this topic it would be nice if people filled out the personal information in the profile, at least location and first name.
I for one don't mind handles but we should at least sign the post with our first name it makes quoting in a reply easier.

Well my handle as you call it is my initials. I do list my real name and location in my profile which also shows up under my handle. I do not list my birthday or a visible email address since i believe posting this info on a public forum opens yourself up to the phishers and scammers. I'm sure there are still those who recall the emails to builders wishing to purchase instruments that originated i believe it was somewhere in asia. As for someone being able to hide behind their handle. Would our real name and address visible really prevent someone from saying something offensive? Not really i can recall a few offensive things that were recently said towards a certain person with their real name visible...Mike
