Jay suggested I post shots of this guitar when finished. You've seen the rosette in an earlier thread, so that part will look familiar. Here's the stats: Honduran Rosewood back/sides Adirondack top H. Rosewood fretboard/bridge (cut from same piece) Kingwood bindings Mahogany/Kingwood neck FWI pins and saddle Attachment: A 011.jpg Attachment: A 014.jpg Attachment: A 017.jpg Attachment: A 020.jpg Attachment: A 012.jpg The ivory end pin was fitted after the shot was taken. Thats one nice looking guitar. Love that sunburst. I have a question though. Why extra sound holes and do you make the front one smaller than normal? |

I like the back and the sides... the grain seem to be really confused... That's what makes it beautiful but.. Didn't you have any problems working it? I've recently worked with some african mahogany with really disorded grains, it was a nightmare... |

John, that extra sound hole is just a spare. Customer's request...wanted to hear what he was playing. And no (good question) the actual soundhole is same size as normal. We tried playing it A/B style, with the soundport open, and then closed. No difference out front, but a good bit richer for the player. Mike, I suppose you could call it that. Perhaps a milk chocolate. It's not as dark in person as it is in the photos. Thanks guys, Steve |

Hi Francis, we were typing at the same time. Yes, the wood was a little unruly. As the grain turned away from the quarter and moved toward slab, the sides wanted to ripple and cup. It wasn't so bad, though, that they couldn't be flattened out. Normally I would have put the quartered figure at "top", but the way the wood was flawed at one end, we had to flip it over like the picture shows. Steve |

Great looking guitar as usual, Steve. HRW has become my latest favorite B&S wood. I'm itching to build a 00 from it soon. BTW...are you still bending by hand? Would SS2 have helped with the bending? Thanks for posting! |

Mike, Joe, Dave, thank you gents. Greg, that's sorta my experience, too. The wood must actually want to be Marimba bars. However, when coaxed into a guitar, there seem to be few peers among tone woods. JJ, HRW is one of my favorites as well. In fact Honduran w/ a smattering of Cocobolo could be all a guy needs for "alternate" rosewoods. Yes, I still bend by hand. On even numbered months, under a full moon. Super Soft might have worked, though it didn't occur to me to try it. You might need to use that for the tight bends of a 00. Get the sides as thin as you dare before bending. My thanks guys! Steve |

Waddy, what a nice thing to say. Thank you. Randolph, thank you as well. My hope and my client's hope--he urged this 13 fret configuration--was that you'd have some of the benefit of a 14 fret neck, and some of the benefit of a 12 fret bridge location. Of course the fear is that you'd get neither: you'd end up missing that extra length on the neck, and the rearward movement of the bridge would not be quite enough. Arrrgh. But, not to fear! You feel a weeeeee bit of shortening to the neck, for sure, but wowser, did this guy sound good. Perhaps it was all in the Adi top, but perhaps that shift in bridge placement DID help. There was a noticeable power in the bass not usually heard in a guitar this new. And this guy can be driven hard with a pick, and it gets better as it digs in. Anyway--I like it, and thanks for asking! Michael, thanks amigo! You guys try to stay warm. It's been fairly dry here, but cold. However, the forecast is for some of that west Texas weather to make it down here. Steve |

Steve, another stellar Kinnaird guitar. As I said in your earlier thread that is the nicest radial rosette I've seen and I have to add that the overall aesthetics and colour blending of the whole guitar are nothing short of superb. I even have to say (and I don't believe I'm actually saying this) that if a gun was held to my head and I was told that I had to have a sunburst, then the one on this guitar would be the one I'd choose. It is the best match to an instrument for a sunburst that I have seen. I haven't changed my opinion, but you have got this one as right as they can be. Colin |
