Anyone have a source?

Is this one of the Mahogany's that you can't send across the border from the US?

Thanks
Neil

Hi Neil,

I can't tell you a source for Cuban Mahogany in Canada, sorry.

I can tell you however, that it's one of the Mahoganies that you can't easily send across the border from the US. It's also listed in CITES II like Honduran Mahogany.

Actually both, Cuban and Honduran Mahogany are commercially extinct. Most of the "Honduran" Mahogany you get these days comes from Brazil, Bolivia, or Peru (it's also often sold as South American Mahogany). Doesn't make a difference for shipping though - all of them are hard/impossible to ship across the border.

You can get some Honduran Mahogany from Shane Neifer (I'm not sure whether it's "real" Honduran, or South American. But the back/side set I got from him is very nice).

Hope that helps, Christian

Neil, where are you located?
I am pretty sure Exotic woods in Burlington or A&M woods in cambridge would have it.

Cuban,Honduran,South American mahoganies are all very closely related and the best of any of these will make excellent guitars.I'm just happy when I get my hands on any genuine mahogany no matter what name it has attached to itself.

Try Ed Dicks. I have got some from him in the past.

Thats a second for Ed @ Acoustic Woods,

But last time i spoke to him, he said that they had pretty much shut down the non-soundboard side of the business, as they were now cutting around 500,000 tops per year!!

i bought some killer cuban sets and some cuban neck blanks from Ed a number of years ago.

Hi Neil

George Heinl in Toronto shows Mahogany B&S sets, although you'd have to verify
the variety.

There was a site called "maderas.ca" I think in Toronto that specialized in Cuban mahogany. The man's name there was Marv Vandermeer, I believe. I cannot find their site on web tonight. Also, you could get cuban lumber from blue moon exotic lumber in NY- I think it can be exported because it is plantation grown(I think near the phillipines, but it is supposed to be sweitenia mahogania). I have recently bought 4 large logs from the extreme tip of Fl, hurricane damage from Rita and Katrina, but even hurricane harvested, I am not sure is proper for export. I would think Marv from maderas would still be in business somewhere there, although I last contacted him by email in Jun 2008.
