Fellow OLF'er Stephen Boone dropped by the shop to build a guitar with me. We have 10 days to get 'er done. Today is day 2.
The sides and back have been thicknessed using the safety planer. They have been sanded with a drum sander. The sides were bent by hand on an iron. The neck is made and the sides are attached. The back of the rims has been radiused and the top is joined with Stephen's signature rosette installed.

Excellent progress for day 2 !!!

I like the shape of the guitar. Would you call it an large body classical or it just the picture?

It is similar to a hauser shape give or take a few millimeters.
Things are happening fast today. I will give a progress report later today.

Yes, the 10 days includes my French polish course and a set up. Depending on how much time we have the FP gets done on the entire guitar. If we don't have enough time, the top at least gets done and then you leave with the FP know how to finish it up.

Robbie,
You're cruising again! Wow, 2 back to back classes, and another after this. You are a monster! By the way, you must have been so tired that you miscalculated 9-5 with an hour lunch equals 7 hours of work! Still pretty amazing that you can build a guitar in 10 days from start to finish. That would yield 3 guitars a month if you were doing this full time! Look forward to updates.

Well, we know that a basic guitar can be assembled in 2 weeks if everything is on hand and ready to go. I put a german silver tricone body together in 40 hours. But it's still fun to watch someone kicking ass and doing it. Go Stephen go! [:Y:] :D

Bill is refering to a previous student that finished a 10 day steel string course with me last week. I never could get him to smile on camera but he sure did when he played his new guitar.

Progress report day 6

The bindings were installed on the back and all bindings were then scraped flush. The fretboard was leveled. The neck was carved. The bridge was rough cut and slotted in preperation for shaping. Basically the guitar is built. Tomorrow we will begin the sanding and do a pore fill in prep for the French polish.

Progress report day 8

The FP is complete on the top. The bridge is made and glued to the top. The fret work has been done.
The nut and saddle have been made. The tuners are installed. The neck has been pore filled. Tomorrow morning the strings go on. Steve has decided to then make the long drive back to Montana and then do the back and side finish at home.

We are done. Stephen was in the shop for about an hour this morning. Just long enough to put the strings on and play a few notes. He should be a few hours out from Bozeman at this point.

Here is a fun video I made of our time together building the guitar.

Enjoy!
