I just had friend over with his cello, he's always been intrigued by the sound ports I put in my guitars and he said "hey, can we pop a sound port in my cello?" (inexpensive cello).
We did and boy did it make a difference. Not only louder, but the tone improved and it reduce a wolf note he was having some trouble with.

What a great idea, Jim. How big and where was it?

Funny you should mention sound ports in a Cello!

I was just at a luthier friend of mine Elmo MacDonald's, who also makes guitars and is well known for his killer mandolins, and he had a Cello in the white for his grandson with a sound port. He actually carved out wooden threads in the sound port so you could screw in a wooden decrotive plug if you didn't want the port.

Very interesting stuff. Very talented man.
