Post subject:  Tradition

Now that we are celebrating our very cool new software here on the OLF I wanted to start a thread and invite all members to participate here.

The subject is "tradition" and more specifically OLF traditions. Even though we have never formally listed our traditions in one place I thought that this might be fun to do.

For example when someone posts pictures of a completed guitar/instrument I always give them five clapping hands emoticons ( [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap] ). In fact having this emoticon installed today by Lance is what gave me the idea for this thread.

Other OLF traditions that I can think of include and are specific to certain members. We have and all appreciate our Grumpy is another example.

So Folks let's hear some things that you consider to be part of the OLF culture? Another example would be our middle of the night visits from Billy when he deposits photoshopped images............... :D And things that when ever we talk about them less then desirable things seem to happen i.e. BRW, ES, etc.

Another example that comes to my mind is Uncle Bob aka the Zootman and how the tradition surrounding Zootman Bob has even changed our vocabularies to include "zoot" when describing wood.

For better or worse, all in fun, let's hear what you consider to be OLF tradition?

Thanks! :P

A fairly new tradition is Waddy as the official Pick on Michael grammar cop ;) just teasing

Another one of my favorites is Some asking is it ok to seal the guitar with shellac prior to epoxy filling. That tradition is pretty much required twice a month ;)

I'd say the most overwhelming tradition I've seen since joining this forum is an almost guaranteed witty - or attempted witty - reply from Hesh when things start to get serious...

Followed by Waddy...

Followed by....

You got that backward Me and Howard both call them what they are linings. kerfing is the saw dust on the floor after making kerf'd linings. But i was not going to mention that one [headinwall]

Rod True's 2006 Chrismas song, "Oh Holy Night" was a classic. It could have been elevated to a tradition this year (2007) had he chosen to post it again. It's still not too late Rod!

I love the kerfing debates. We understand a kerf is the space between the material, not the material itself...but we still call then that anyway.

How about checking the forum 87 times a day when we should be working or building.

Do we list building traditions, or just forum traditions?

Michael bro it's "Howard and I" not "me and Howard"......... :D

Will someone please post a link to Rod's Christmas tune - that was indeed one of the funniest things ever on the OLF!!!! Excellent JJ!! [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap]

Also, Howard has reminded us that a "build" is a verb and not a noun - remember this one? :D

And how about Tor-Tise and tortise? :D Grumps :D

Great stuff folks - keep em coming..........

Post subject:  Re: Tradition

I can only think of a couple new traditions that I would like to see,

The first would be to reserve this emoticon for Grumpy. [headinwall] I for one appreciate his attempts to share what he has learned and can understand the frustration when some of us dunderheads just don't get what he is saying. At times it really must feel like he is banging his head against the wall.

Shortly after I stared lurking here there was a tread entitled roll call it was enjoyable to read about who it was that hung out here and encouraged me to come out of the wood work. It would be a cool thing to see once or twice a year.

Lastly the swap meet was just too cool to not have it become a once a year tradition.

TWICE a year! [:Y:] :D

I also love the "What's on Your Bench" or What's Going on in Your Shop" threads. They keep me stimulated to stay at it.

I'm amazed you still have the file...some people just have to save everything...just like the stained blue dress.

Thanks, Rod...you're a good sport...and I'm so happy you have cut back on the RumBeer!

Now if your kids can get you to stop running around the house with HHG boogers hanging out your nose!

Huhm! Less than desirable.............. interesting phrasing ?? :D

I always thought the true term for kerf'd liners was actually kerflings! Even if it isn't, it is now!!! :D

JJ: Rod really belts that one out doesn't he! :D I have it copied to my computer and play it every Xmas!

My favorite are the Heshutorials! They're a great deal of work but they sure make his process clear! Even if it's not the way I would do it, it still really helps bring the hole environment up!

Hrmmmm....I KNEW there was a smart reason I joined this forum.
Already I learned something.
Mark refers to the acutal items as 'kerfed liners' hehe. Kerfing therefore IN MY OPINION refers to the process of forming the liners shape.

and in my lurking, I LOVE the photos of the shops and current projects. I learn alot that way and thats what keeps ME coming back

Zach buddy I don't know where the tub of lard originated but it was here before I got here.

JJ here is one for you my friend - remember Serge's farting thread???? I think that it went 7 pages long - perhaps a record and absolutely nothing that made any sense what so ever was said........ :D

Billy bro I am not going to mess with you - I want this thread to be about OLF culture, or lack of same....... and not create any new culture...... :D

Pat I DO remember Don's cat thread - anyone want to post a link? That was great!!!! [clap] [clap] [clap]

Post subject:  Re: Tradition

Colleen, the kerfing is the slots in the lining to let it bend with the side shape, for ease of gluing in place. Therefore, a kerf is a space, and kerfing is the act of slotting the linings, not to be confused with the kerfed linings themselves.

The thing I remember most is that it was so absurdly hilarious and occasionally someone would enter the thread to admonish our childish behavior and leave in a huff. The fact is...it was at least 7 pages but the number of hits was a bazillion or so. Glad we could provide some comic relief for the lurkers who chose not to enter the fray.

I really don't know how Lance and Brock can put up with us sometimes...especially you! :D

Hey Colleen don't worry about kerfing much. I always thought it was some sort of a jig maybe an Irish Jig. An no mutter what anyone say, dats my story and I is a stickin to it.
