It appears that my LMI fretting templates make the nut-end of the
fingerboard closer to the first fret than it should be by half the width of
the tablesaw blade I use. I just busted out the calipers, and the distance
between the nut "groove" and 1st fret "groove", center to center, is
exactly what the distance between the two should be on the actual FB.
This does not account for the width of the saw kerf. For slots where frets
will end up, this is not a problem because the center of the fret is still
above the center of the slot. But for the end of the FB, an additional
0.0115" is taken off. So essentially I have been compensating my nut
without knowing it, although I don't actually take that into consideration
when compensating the saddle, so it's not beneficial.

Does this make sense, or am I off my proverbial rocker?

When I referred to the "grooves", I mean the notches in the template.

That's exactly how Taylor's nuts ended up being compensated. Quite by mistake, but they liked it and ended up sticking with it.

Thanks, David. I think I might be ok with it too. I'm not exactly sure how
to account for yet though when it comes time to intonate. I'm thinking
something with balancing the intonation between the open and 12th fret
notes, and other fretted notes, like 1 and 13 or something. Any idea how
they do it?

Amazing, I glue a .010 ebony shim on all my boards. And they sound great.....

Of course, I cut my own now and don't have that built in mistake....

(knock over proverbial can of worms)

Hey if Taylor and Doolin do it, it must be fine....

But I've actually measured all four Taylors I purchased.
